A Vacation Home Inspired by Yurts, On Colorado’s Plains !

What’s a Yurt ?

A yurt is a circular, cylindrical building that has been used for at least the last several thousand years and is covered with a conical roof. The yurt’s original forebearers prized it for its mobility, durability, and structural soundness. Its origins are in Central Asia, Yurts can be set up and taken down quickly (just a few hours of effort), and they can be transported on the backs of animals also.

In addition to finding their way into Western culture, yurts are still utilized by nomadic peoples in Central Asian steppes. In the 1960s, William Coperthwaite, a pioneer in yurts, brought them to the United States for the first time.

Yurts create images of nature-inspired escape from urban boundaries, generally with the help of cool breezes, cold drinks, and the periodic swing of a canopy. Unfortunately, as the designers behind this holiday house swiftly discovered, dreams don’t always come true.

Yurts Colorado

In the western Colorado town of Fruita, the homeowners had plans to create a number of yurt tents, but it quickly became clear from the surrounding hills that such nomadic ideas would not withstand the severe environment. According to the architect  “It seemed like he was entering into an oven the first time he visited the site. It was probably 107 degrees outside.” He says, “I was searching the horizon and attempting to find some shade. The architect, like the homeowners, was taken with the concept of the circular buildings, but he was aware that they required fresh design.

When Colorado residents wanted a number of tent yurts for their holiday home, the architect proposed these more sturdy “yurt-inspired” constructions instead, to withstand the severe climate—which can frequently reach into the hundreds during the summer and encounter high winds throughout the year. But it was difficult to come up with a solution. The home’s architect spent two years exploring design ideas. Given the recent growth in the popularity of yurts, he was surprised he hadn’t seen more architects during this time. They developed and obtained permission for another structure before changing their minds and taking this approach, According to the architect, “There was an issue currently with circular structures, which was how to attach anything to them. A round structure really wants to sit on its own.In the end, the architect came up with a contemporary building that was joined to three different-sized yurts for living space. With windows on all sides and views of a private lake, the biggest comprises the living and dining areas. The master bedroom was located in a more quiet area of the second yurt, and the sliding glass doors to the outdoor shower were just a few feet away. A third yurt, situated away in a secure courtyard, provides the kids’ bunk room.

The center of the house, according to the architect, had to include all of the essential rooms, such as the kitchen, bathroom, and corridors linking to the yurts. It has an open, airy atmosphere that stimulates wandering, and the architect compares it to “an independent box within a farmhouse.” The structure is defined by a combination of steel beams, and the traditional insect-kill wood panels and the crisp white walls below were divided by beams along the horizon. The majority of the living area shade is also provided by the center structure. The architect made the decision to go big after considering his previous experience at the location. The deck was efficiently increased by moving the stairs back from the columns, increasing its size without needing to extend the roof. The balcony faces southeast and shields the house from the worst sun. A smooth and bolt-free courtyard was created by sinking the beams into the concrete, according to the architect, saving the residents from the unexpected problem occurring forefoot.

Concrete, in particular, is used extensively throughout the house to maintain both a comfortable interior temperature and the relaxed way of life of the owners. The homeowner says, “It’s perfect for accommodating multiple groups at once.” The family recently hosted 30-plus guests over a weekend on the property, which includes a number of campsites with electricity installations and a large shed. “The focus is on outdoor living, and it’s really moderate, even with sand-covered kids and dogs running through the home,” said the family.

Ultimately, everyone was happy that the house’s round, the yurt-inspired design was maintained. The homeowner remarks, “There’s something extremely personal about the round space.” With windows all around the circumference, you may actually feel more at one with nature.

Although modern yurts use contemporary materials like transparent acrylic windows, high-strength steel wires, and UV-resistant marine-grade polyester cladding, they nonetheless maintain the same general architectural principles as their East Asian forebears. Today, you can purchase a yurt that has skylights, French doors, windows, and drains. Yurts can be located beside rivers as the primary dwelling of former business executives, situated deep in the woods housing campers and hikers, and perched high up on mountains providing extreme skiers.

Felted wool rugs and bamboo roof pillars are no longer the only options for yurt construction. High-efficiency curved glass windows, cutting-edge insulation, and transparent glass vinyl ceilings can all be added to the modern yurt. The faux leather wool of vintage designs has been replaced with polyester and braided rope of marine toughness. Modern yurts can be designed to manage hot tropical regions or built to resist severe snowfall.
